Behind the Lenses

Pretty. Beautiful.

Both words used to describe

something that is attractive.

I always wanted glasses

as a little girl.

Because I thought they'd

make me pretty and beautiful.

I thought they made me look smart.

They gave me a way

to see my intelligence.

They gave me a way

to believe in myself.

A belief that wasn't always there

when I didn't have the glasses

I hide behind the big lenses

to be able to feel those words.

It's now 10 years later

and nothing has changed.

I now have glasses

and want to believe

I don't need to hide behind them.

But I still do.

Every day.

I still think

they provide me that beauty.

I still think

they make me pretty.

I guess I still have a long way to go.
